MY POETRY: Page 4

Verne’s Song

By Curtis Anderson

Ridin’ tall in the saddle, head held high, hind legs bowed,

Pushin’ 200 buckin’ horses down old Murphy road

That’s a man they call Verne, he’s known around these parts

For raisin’ buckin’ horses and breakin’ wild hearts.

Here’s hoping there’ll always be a VV in Vegas.

On a long distance ride under wide open skies

His hands never swell upon the reins

He knows enough about cattle that sometimes it a battle

He never says a lot about a little pain

Here’s hoping there’ll always be a VV in Vegas

He’s got a pail of hot water and sleep in his eyes

There’s a mare foaling, she picked the middle of the night

He works every muscle to pull that colt out alive

He sees something precious in that young mare’s eyes.

Here’s hoping there’ll always be a VV in Vegas

Ridin’ hurt through the night until the morning light

His work is just began for the day,

A job he can’t get away from on a Sunday to pray

But the Lord knows he’s never gonna stray

Here’s hoping there’ll always be a VV in Vegas

Came down from the city at the ranch before day break for his last cattle drive

Well Verne’s getting old some, that’s understood

He still breaks horses like I never could.

Here’s hoping there’ll always be a VV in Vegas.

VV Horses

Some say that Verne’s best horse

Was a bay K2 Kingsway Skoal

Verne didn’t play any rounds of golf

But he enjoyed watching 435 Skoal’s Airwolf

You better pull your hat down a smidge

When you draw Skoal’s Blue Ridge

The horse that was like a Yo-Yo

Goes by the name of Mo-Jo

You better pull up the slack

If you’re going to do good on Jet-Black

To some it was really pleasant

When they drew Little Pheasant

Everything was okay if you

Had your spurs in the mane of Jaye Aye

You’ll soon find out if you’re playing

Truth or dare, when you draw Nightmare

In Oklahoma the screenings of cotton are called moats

Bennie Beutler didn’t own a horse named Wild Oats

You better ride better than Mr Magoo

When they fill the chute with Blue Two

Verne was careful on the downhill grade

When he was hauling Billy Bob Spade

You better have your head in the game

When you draw the eliminator No-Name

It’s no surprise you can win first on Highrise

Sometimes you hit the brakes

Let ‘er all out on Pulling Stakes

There isn’t to many cowboys from Davenport

Doug Scrufty Vold won six firsts on Transport

You can be sure Leaning Tower

Will throw you the power

A broke saddle horse goes by the name J P Roam

A lot of cowboys ride at the Houston Astrodome

At Xmas time everyone has walnuts

A rank horse that was around for a while was Coconut

When it comes to being a cowboy, Shane is a top hand

A real good buckskin is Sandpaper

Shane might have a few Crowns but he won’t be silly

You’ll go to the top on a paint called Cowboy Chilli

Ride with all your might when you draw Frostbite

It is no audition when you draw Limited Edition

Shane will have a steak when he dines

A horse that kicks the lights out is Ultimately Fine

If you’re lucky enough to draw a VV

They will be running out of the trees wild as can be

After you win first on Pop a Top

You’re ready to go to the hop

When it comes time for Lindsay

To put on the leather gloves

He would pull the flank just right

That the VV horse bucked with all their might

When he was hauling Billy Bob Spade

If you’re lucky enough to draw  VV

They will be running out of trees wild as can be

When it came time for Lindsay

To put on the leather gloves

He would pull the flank just right

That the VV horses bucked with all their might

After you’re done going to the mane

Hand Lanni your bronc rein.

Luck of the Draw

The crowd couldn't wait till they opened the gate.

435 Airwolf didn't hesitate,

he reared out, without any doubt.

Glen rode, jump for jump, lifting on his rein,

because the money is in the mane.

When the crowd heard Jack Daines voice,

holler 95 points, everyone roared.

Verne was listening in 3C, it brought a smile with glee,

knowing the World Record was set on 2 horses with VV.
